I bought a book on making chains a little while ago, had a skim through and put it to one side on the grounds that I just couldn’t be arsed.

The problem is, that there isn’t a great deal of solid copper chain on the market, well, not that I like, at least! I made a pendant last week from copper with a blue alexandrite stone with a unicorn carved on it that would really suit a heavy chain. So out came the book and I decided to give it a whirl. It was a bit of a faff, making, filing and soldering eighty individual links, but rather calming, as some seemingly monotonous tasks so often are. I started thinking about other things I could make while I was doing it…

I made a trace chain from copper, which meant making lots of circular rings, assembling the chain and soldering the links closed and then shaping the links into ovals. It still needs a few hours tumbling with steel shot, but that will have to wait until I get home. But as a work in progress, I’m rather pleased…
